When I first started using LinkedIn to grow my coaching business, I approached it like most people do. I thought of it as a professional platform, a place to share my credentials, post occasionally, and hope someone would notice. I logged in to promote my services, post my accomplishments, and maybe land a client or two.
But nothing really happened. My posts got a few likes. My profile had views but very little engagement. I wasn’t getting leads, and I definitely wasn’t building the kind of visibility I wanted.
Then, something shifted.
I realized that I had been treating LinkedIn like a digital billboard—a place to broadcast. What I hadn’t realized is that the real power of LinkedIn lies in its ability to connect.
And that shift changed everything.
LinkedIn Isn’t Just a Platform. It’s a Community.
The moment I stopped thinking of LinkedIn as a place to "post and promote" and started thinking of it as a space to build genuine relationships, my entire experience changed.
Instead of asking, "How can I get more visibility?" I started asking, "How can I connect more deeply?"
That meant:
And as I did that, something amazing happened.
My visibility increased. My posts got more engagement. My inbox started filling with messages from people who felt seen, inspired, or curious. Most importantly, I started attracting clients who were aligned, excited, and ready to work together.
Why This One Shift Matters So Much for Business Owners
If you're a coach, consultant, or service-based entrepreneur, people don’t buy your service—they buy you. They want to know who you are, how you think, and whether they can trust you to guide them.
That kind of trust isn’t built through perfectly curated posts. It’s built through presence, consistency, and connection.
So when you use LinkedIn as a tool for real engagement—when you show up as a human, not just a professional—you create a space for trust to grow. And that trust? It turns into leads, referrals, and long-term clients.
What Changed When I Started Connecting Instead of Just Promoting
When I stopped trying to "get seen" and focused on showing up for others, here’s what changed:
How You Can Shift Your Mindset on LinkedIn
If you feel like LinkedIn isn’t "working" for you, it might not be your content or your strategy. It might be your mindset.
Here are three ways to start shifting:
Your content is important, but it’s only one part of the equation. Engagement is where trust is built. Respond to comments, message new connections, and genuinely participate in the community.
People resonate with your story, not just your strategy. Share the lessons you’ve learned, the moments that challenged you, and the growth that shaped your journey.
Instead of chasing likes or viral posts, prioritize connection. The impact of one meaningful conversation can be far greater than 10,000 views.
LinkedIn Works—When You Work It With Intention
LinkedIn is one of the most powerful platforms for business growth—especially for coaches and service-based entrepreneurs. But to truly make it work, you need to stop treating it like a digital megaphone and start using it like a coffee shop.
Show up. Ask questions. Listen. Support others. Share who you really are.
That one shift—from promotion to connection—has changed everything for me.
And it can for you, too.
